Great Stay- Corte della Maestà, Civita di Bagnoregio in Lazio

Civita di Bagnoregio has been on my must-visit list for a long time. It's located 2 hours north of Rome in the province of Lazio, close to the borders of Umbria and Tuscany. When the quaint Corte della Maestà was awarded the coveted 3 Michelin Keys, I decided that it was time to plan a trip!

The town of Civita, founded by the Etruscans, sits high on a tufa stone hill somehow spared centuries of earthquakes and erosion.
Getting there

It's a bit of a hike up an incline on the 300 meter (1/4 mile) pedestrian-only footbridge. No worries about your luggage though—they happily transport your suitcase by tractor to the hotel.

The welcome committee
Olivia and Ortensia, two amiable Labradors, ensure guests feel at home. Each has a designated basket to offer, but Ortensia gets upset when Olivia takes "her" basket! They are friendly and kept us company during our stay. 🐶

Corte della Maestà has 4 guest rooms, each with its own flavor. We were visiting with our friends from Norway and were lucky to be the only guests. We had the whole property to enjoy by ourselves which included a post-dinner game of chess with a whiskey for the gents.

Cristiana takes tremendous pride in her property and makes sure guests have everything they might need or want. We enjoyed chatting with her and were surprised to find she was born and raised in our town, Padova. Svein and I hope to see her again when she comes to visit her family!
Our room was spacious and had a small balcony. Bathrooms were equipped with a shower and bathtub and all the creature comforts one would expect from a Michelin 3-Key stay.
Breakfast
Breakfast at Corte della Maestà is a sophisticated, multi-course and gluttonous affair. It's as elegantly presented as it is varied. Sweet and savory are both covered and everything is served on china, crystal and sliver.
The town

There are a few restaurants in town which Cristiana will happily book for you, as La Corte only serves breakfast. The town's population is dwindling and she is one of very few overnight residents left in town. She knows everyone.

Shoppers won't want to miss the Acqua di Civita store on the main square. They sell fragrances, diffusers and candles for the home alongside lotions made with donkey milk. I'm a sucker for new concoctions, so poor Svein ended up lugging my 10-pound treasure trove back down the footbridge!
If you go to Civita di Bagnoregio and see Cristiana at Corte della Maestà, please say ciao for me!

Andrea, I have read about Civitia and its charm. So glad you and Svein went.
Ciao, Wanda
