New Pizzeria in Buckhead, Atlanta: Krog Bar Coal Fired Pizza

Kevin Rathbun's Krog Bar has moved uptown to Buckhead with a new concept- coal fired pizza. The neighborhood was in need of more casual dining options, particularly a pizzeria. Here's a peek into the newly opened Krog Bar endeavor.

The pizzeria is adjacent to Kevin's KR SteakBar in ADAC West off of Peachtree Hills Avenue. They do not offer reservations, but drinks are served on the patio while you wait.

The vibe...

It's tiny! This is it- one room with four 4-top tables, a communal table for 6 and seating at the bar. The cramped quarters add to the lively vibe. Expect lots of families walking over from the neighborhood, as evidenced by the line of strollers at the door.

Pizza verdict

PIZZA MARGHERITA

Our first impression was mixed. The crust was very charred, and some bites had a strange gritty texture, almost like sand. On our second visit Kevin Rathbun himself was inspecting the pizzas as they came out - no grit present! It appears the problem was solved!

THE COAL FIRED OVEN

There are 8 pizzas to choose from, but myriad toppings can be added for additional variety. A few snacks as starters, salads and sandwiches round out the menu.

The tomato topping on our first visit was thick and heavy-handed. However, this wasn't the case on our second visit a few days later.

One curious combo was the clam and pecorino pizza.

The Wine List

The short wine list was uninspired and heavily marked up, which was disappointing given the interesting selection next door. Quite a few people were enjoying Aperol Spritz though!

Overall, I think it's a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I am sure it will do well and maybe even expand into the empty space next door- let's hope!

Ciao for now,

Andrea
