Sardinia has 1850 km (1150 mi) of stunning coastline and when the crowds of August clear out and the off-season October weather is still warm, private beaches await to those seeking the serenity of nature and sea.
Yes, some resorts (particularly in the popular Costa Smeralda) close for the winter at the beginning of October and that makes late September optimal. Nonetheless, we had a 65th birthday to celebrate in October and elected the southern part of the island, which still offered plenty of accommodation options.
THE RED ROCKS OF ARBATAX ARE STUNNING
IT'S STILL WARM ENOUGH FOR A SEA SWIM!
HOTEL LA BITTA, ARBATAX
Along the western coastline on the Sinis Peninsula lies the 7th century BC city of Tharros founded by the Carthagnians. Back in its hayday Tharros was a booming trade capital made evident upon excavating exquisite gold jewelry from burial grounds of these ancient inhabitants. The "Gold of Tharros" is now found in museums around the world.
The nearby beach of Sinis is serene and tranquil with only a few surfers and and dog walkers.
Bosa also offers unque jewelry shopping. It's famous for high karat filigrana d'oro, golden filigree. Even though there were a good number of tourists in town, we found the food to be fresh and delicious.
Further down the western coast, Hotel Cosaro Nero, near the town of Arbus, has spectacular views and a private beach.
The hotel has a mere 6 rooms directly looking onto the coast, and the restaurant with its sweeping views seats over 100 and is packed with locals. The fish selection was outstanding!
I hope your travels take you to Sardinia to discover its uncrowded yet numerous stunning coastlines and beaches.
