SPRITZ- The Art of Italian Aperitivo

Updated: Oct 7

For decades Italians have adored lo spritz, which is a concoction of equal parts sparkling wine (usually Prosecco), sparkling water and a bitter liquor (Campari or Aperol). In the hours between work and dinner bars and cafes are bustling with thirsty patrons who are often given a little snack to stave off pre-dinner hunger pangs.

CAMPARI IS BOTH DARKER AND MORE BITTER THAN ITS ORANGE SIBLING, APEROL

Campari hails from Milano and I highly recommend you try out Camparino's version. It's located in the Galleria Emanuele II with a view of the famous Duomo di Milano, making it a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds. The Milanese aperitivo frequently includes a wide variety of snacks that if you aren't careful can easily spoil your dinner!

Originating in Padova, Aperol has gained worldwide popularity, thus a saavy local bar in our town is taking advantage of the trend by re-fashioning itself in Aperol orange! It overlooks Piazza dei Frutti, one of the town's four popular main squares.

Around 11:00 in Padova it is common to see coffee being traded in for a pre-lunch spritz, so it's not just for aperitivo anymore!

Personally, I favor Campari over Aperol as I find Aperol too sweet for my taste. I also like the addition of a green olive or two, the way they do it in Venice. The husband prefers Aperol, but then again he doesn't like bitter greens like rapini either. I would love to hear what your favorite is!

Ciao for now,

Andrea

I prefer Aperol Spritz as Campari has always been a little too bitter for me! What a delightful and refreshing cocktail it is! I love it !😍
