Cool-cation- Stockholm, Sweden

Need a break from the Italian or American heat? A cool-cation in stunning Stockholm just might be perfect for you! Here are my tips to dodge the crowds and discover the road less trampled!

Sightseeing tips...
Okay, so the Royal Palace isn't "off grid", but it's worth a visit. Tip- go during the changing of the guards at noon to experience lighter crowds inside the palace.

Located further afield, the almost empty Thiel Gallery is housed in a former private residence and boasts an impressive collection of works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The gallery is reachable by a 30-minute boat ferry. On a beautiful Sunday in June we found many locals were picnicking on the grounds.

Stockholm archipelago is comprised of 30,000 islands so, taking a boat tour is a must on any agenda! Luckily, Svein has a friend with a boat and license to enter Strömmen, the waterway in the historic center. No friend- no problem! There were various companies offering tours.
Wining & dining- casual

Stockholm's enclosed food hall market, Saluhall, is a fantastic feast for all the senses. Lisa Elmqvist offers a restaurant table-service experience right within the market walls.
Other casual spots we enjoyed were:
Dipolmat Restaurant- Well-heeled locals having high tea mix it up with tourists. The Swedish baby prawn salad was not only fresh but also generously portioned. Svein loved his Swedish Meatballs, to quote "much better than IKEA". 🤣
Crème- Again another perfect, healthy and abundant baby prawn salad.
Sture Hof- seafood, seafood, seafood!
Wining and dining- fancy
Operakällaren, along with its adjacent bar, Othilía, is a Stockholm institution and holds a Michelin star.

Gondolen Restaurant looks quite modern with the bridge-like appearance jutting out from an office tower, but it's actually been around since 1935. The atmosphere is a nod to times gone by, as are the waitstaff.
And the wine...
This is Scandinavia so before your feet hit the soil, go ahead and adjust your restaurant wine budget upward. That being said, we had a bottle of Veuve Cliquot at the upscale Bar Othilía for the equivalent of around $100USD which we felt was a great bargain compared to the entry-level Sancerre lunch wine we had drinking for the same price point!
Do you need a cool-cation? Where will you go?
