Princely Wine of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Hofkellerei

When traveling around the world, it's fun to collect souvenirs that evoke the memory of happy times in the places you've explored. The travel trinkets need not be tacky tchotchkes, but useful items. Some of my favorites are salt, olive oil or vinegar, a cute bowl to serve antipasti, an easy to pack kitchen towel, and, last but not least...wine! Last night, Svein and I uncorked a bottle of "princely wine" from Liechtenstein, taking us on a delightful trip down memory lane, which I am excited to share here!

The Hofkellerei Liechtenstein winery, owned the Prince of Liechtenstein. produces exceptional wines. Each wine reflects the unique terroir of Liechtenstein, and the small production makes the wine a unique (and rare) addition to any cantina.

HERAWINGERT VINEYARD IN WINTER

We had an exceptional experience lead by our informative guide, Aldo, as we were drank through their full repertoire of wines, starting with sparkling, moving on to the other wines produced in Liechtenstein, then Austria and finally a Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany.

The Herawingert vineyard is located at the winery in Vaduz, Liechtenstein and consists of only four hectares on southwestern facing slopes. It's touted as being one of the very best wine-producing areas in the whole Rhine Valley. The production is mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Other varietals on offer at the winery are: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Zweigelt, Merlot and Blaufränkisch. The standouts, however, were the single-vineyard pinot noirs from Herawingert.

THE PRINCELY CASTLE OVERLOOKING LIECHTENSTEIN'S CAPITAL, VADUZ

Liechtenstein is a tiny principality of just 40,000 inhabitants and is located on the border between Austria and Switzerland. The capital of Vaduz is a one street town and its commerce centers around finance and banking. It's a sleepy town but one with a very high standard of living.

Pro tip-

Don't miss Restaurant Torkel situated close by the winery and also in the vineyards. The dining room boasts Europe’s largest wooden wine press (aka, torkel) and the kitchen, a Michelin star.
