2 days on the Adriatic Coast of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Updated: Aug 7

This trip was inspired by our latest binge watch on Prime called The Silence of Water (in Italian with English subtitles). It is filmed in the costal area of Friuli and offers breathtaking views of cliffs and the Adriatic Sea. The hotel, where several scenes are set, was operational and appeared pleasant, prompting us to book a weekend stay and experience it firsthand. It's located just outside the town of Miramare near Trieste.

While the rooms at Hotel Riviera and Maximian's could benefit from a refresh, we were told that new carpeting would be installed the week following our visit in June. The common areas were elegant and well looked after. The hotel staff were among the most exceptional we have come across.

Dinner both nights simple yet delicious and fresh. The whole fish was filleted table-side simply grilled or baked in a salt crust, my personal favorite, because it comes out so moist.

And we always enjoy Friuli's white wines, especially the grape variety, Ribolla Gialla. It's crisp with hints of mineral and refreshing for Summer evening.

As for things to do, the royals of the Hapsburg empire built a castle in Miramare. Much of North-eastern Italy was under Austrian rule for periods of time in history.

CASTELLO MIRAMARE

The wealth amassed by the ruling empires in the early centuries (13th-19th) is truly impressive and is evedent in this castello. The gardens alone are a must-see, and the interiors still boast their original furnishings. Being a Hapsburg must have been nice & not a bad place to spend a couple of weeks in the Summer!

Back at the hotel for one last sea-side breakfast...

The thoughtful staff must have noted my date of birth from my passport and made the send-off extra special!

Ciao for now,

Andrea
